Más nevek: Mother-in-law's tongue, Saint George's sword
The Snake Plant (Dracaena trifasciata) is a hardy, evergreen succulent known for its upright, sword-shaped leaves. It is a popular indoor plant that requires minimal care and tolerates low light conditions well.
Basic info
Snake Plant, formerly known as Sansevieria trifasciata, is a perennial evergreen succulent native to West Africa. It features stiff, upright leaves that are typically dark green with lighter horizontal stripes, resembling a snake's skin. The plant grows slowly and can reach heights up to 100 cm, forming dense clumps.
It is widely appreciated as a houseplant due to its tolerance of low light and drought conditions. Although it rarely flowers indoors, it produces small, fragrant white or yellowish flowers. The leaves contain toxins that can be harmful if ingested by pets or humans.
Snake Plants are also valued for their air-purifying qualities, removing toxins from indoor air and improving air quality. They require minimal maintenance and are frost-sensitive, so they should be kept in warm, protected environments during winter.

Environment needs
Care
Snake Plants require minimal watering; allow the soil to dry out between waterings. They prefer bright, indirect light but can tolerate low light. Fertilize monthly during the growing season with a diluted liquid fertilizer. Reduce watering in winter and avoid cold drafts.
Propagation
Propagation is commonly done by dividing rhizomes during repotting or by leaf cuttings. Spring and early summer are the best times for propagation when the plant is actively growing.
Diseases & pests
Snake Plants are generally resistant to pests and diseases. Occasionally, they may suffer from mealybugs or spider mites, which can be treated with insecticidal soap. Overwatering can cause root rot.

Safety
The leaves are toxic if ingested by humans and pets, causing nausea and irritation. Handle with care and keep out of reach of children and animals.
Ecology
In its native habitat, the Snake Plant plays a role in dry ecosystems due to its drought tolerance. Indoors, it contributes to improved air quality by filtering pollutants.
Usage
Primarily used as an ornamental houseplant, it is favored for its architectural foliage and air-purifying properties. It is not edible and should be kept away from pets and children.
