Streptocarpus ionanthus, commonly known as Cape Primrose, is an evergreen perennial houseplant with lance-shaped leaves and colorful trumpet-shaped flowers. It prefers medium light and blooms from spring to autumn.
Basic info
Native to eastern Africa, particularly the Usambara Mountains of South Africa, Streptocarpus ionanthus is a mostly single-leafed, bushy perennial growing 15-30 cm tall. Its lance-shaped, velvety leaves remain green year-round. The trumpet-shaped flowers come in shades of pink, purple, white, and blue, blooming from March to October, providing long-lasting indoor color.
This plant thrives in bright, indirect light or partial shade. It prefers loose, well-draining, nutrient-rich soil. Regular but moderate watering is essential, avoiding waterlogging. During winter, watering should be reduced and the plant kept frost-free.
Propagation is commonly done via leaf or stem cuttings, which requires moderate skill. The plant is non-toxic to humans and pets and attracts bees with its flowers. It has moderate care requirements, making it a popular choice for colorful indoor gardening.
